Mitigation and Monitoring

Mitigation is used in situations where land development requires the alteration of a critical area (wetland, stream, critical habitat) to offset an expected adverse impact to a critical area. Mitigation can be in the form of restoration, creation, enhancement, preservation, or a fee in lieu. The goal is to replace the exact function and value of the specific critical area adversely affected by development. Monitoring requirements are typically specific to a mitigation site. Common items monitored may include plant survival and growth rates, hydrology, individual species counts, wildlife utilization, and invasive species presence.
